This free house serving a range of good beers is tucked away
around the corner as you approach it from Drypool Bridge.
Just as the White Hart is an essential stopping-off point to the
west of Drypool Bridge, so the Waterloo is on the eastern side. In Winter, the east wind can be
terribly biting; and though the Waterloo is hardly a building of beauty, it can seem a remarkably
welcome sight as it comes into view.
The Waterloo is divided into two halves. On one side is a large
area with a traditional pub-like feel to it. On the other is a large area with more of a
"club" atmosphere. Both sides might be described as large and functional.
