Traditional Pubs Fight Back?
latest news 16/05/00
We are indebted to Chris Ketchell of the Local History Unit who writes:
"...please resurrect The 'Provvy' - it hasn't closed down - I went
into it yesterday lunchtime to check and it was OPEN - hooray!!... ( I
can see The 'Provvy' out of our office window)

A Virtual Pub Crawl Visitor writes:-
'Unfortunately, the Providence has closed down, a victim of the never -
ending march of progress. The redevelopment of the city centre has no
place for small pubs like this one. The Earl de Grey is also closed, but
remains up for sale'

The Local History Unit's history of the
Providence shows that it started life some time around 1851, and that the name had been established
by 1855.
Inside you find a Tardis-like effect, with drinking areas that
extend around the bar and, at the back, out into a conservatory set in the (real) beer
garden.
Redevelopment Threat: The March-May 1999 edition
of Hull CAMRA's "Pub Mirror" reveals that a redevelopment scheme for the whole bus
station area threatens to sweep away this good looking Victorian pub (and the nearby White Lion);
and with it yet another link with Hull's past. Anyone with strong views about this should make them
known to Mr K Marshall, Transportation and Planning Division, Hull City Council, Kingston House,
Bond Street, Hull HU1 3ER.
More information can be found on Hull City Council's site at
http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/eda/property.htm.
However, there's no point trying to use the e-mail address on that page to contact Mr Marshall,
because during the week ending 23 April it consistently bounced everything sent to it. Let's hope
no major inward investors were trying to get in touch...
