A big friendly pub at the key crossroads in old Hull. The beers are many, varied, and good; and there is often (but not always) good food to be had. The King William is a key staging post en route between the Old Town and the Victoria Pier area.

One question has long bothered me, not about the pub, but about the statue you can see to the right of the photo above. This is of William of Orange, and dates back to 1734. A long-standing myth suggests that the sculptor killed himself when he realised the statue had no stirrups. The less dramatic truth is that it was clearly designed to show King Billy riding in the classical style - ie bareback - and that the sculptor actually died of old age the best part of fifty years later.
