Once the thriving heart of the city when its fortunes centered on
the River Hull. Times changed and High Street fell into decline. It hasn't fully recovered yet, but
there are signs of investment in the area that bode well for its future.
A feature of the area are the narrow cuts or staithes running down
to the River Hull. Again, these show indications of investment and improvement, including warehouse
conversions into student and other accommodation.
This area does offer one unique attraction (if you like that sort
of thing): if you look carefully enough in the places the tarmac has worn away, you can find traces
of the only wooden cobbles we've ever seen.
The four pubs in the area are a mixed bunch; but each in its own
way is worth a look. The classic must be Ye Olde Black Boy; so if you only have the time or the
inclination for one, that has to be it.
