Most people tend to think of the Old Town of Hull as the whole
area between Princes Quay to the west, the River Hull to the east, and Alfred Gelder Street to the
north. We have taken a narrower definition, simply to make this guide easier to use: rest assured
we are not trying to rewrite geography...
One of the enduring problems facing those seeking to regenerate
city centres is how to move people back: to ensure that the city becomes again somewhere people
live, as well as somewhere they work and play.
It's not really clear how Hull managed to pull off what others
find so difficult. One time we came here and it was derelict and deserted. The next (admittedly a
few years later) and... Well, visit the Old Town and see for yourself. There is now a lot of
housing slotted in here; yet in a way that is somehow in keeping with the character of the area.
Does anyone want to let us have a first-hand account of living in the Old Town?
This is also an area rich in pubs; ranging from the traditional
Bonny Boat or Kingston to the new and impressively converted Mission. In this area, too, you will
find the unique (for Hull) Schnapps bar.
