The Manchester Hotel (left) is dead: long live the Goose and Granite... After three months and, reputedly, half-a-million pounds worth of refurbishment, the Goose and Granite opened on 4 October 1996.Interior Photo

We really liked the dark old wood of the Manchester; and were afraid of what might happen to the place during the refurbishment. The bad news is that the place has changed utterly; and if there is a single piece of wood that remains from its old existence, it is invisible to the visitor. The good news is that what has been done to the Goose and Granite has been done really well. The quality of the furnishings and decor shows where the money has been spent; and there are lots of echoes of the old interior that stop short of a pastiche of what used to be there. Interior Photo

Return visits since the conversion - at least until recently - mostly confirmed our initial positive impressions of the Goose. The decor had settled down and a really nice atmosphere was starting to evolve. In the last few months, however, we've started to wonder about the food service, choice of beer, and a slightly careworn edge to both the exterior and interior. We're hoping we've just been unlucky in the timing of our visits, but we're not sure that's the whole explanation.
