Isn't it just typical? It takes you months to get a decent photo
of a pub because each time you go you time it wrong and end up pointing your lens at the sun. And
then what happens?
They change the place. Can't you make do with the
old photo? Well... not when they change the place this much.
After a period of closure in 1996, what used to be the Wilberforce
(photo on the right) emerged with a striking coat of paint as "Durty Nellies"; an Irish
"theme pub". Sitting neatly at the junction of Scale Lane and High Street, this pub
continues to be ideally placed for those in transit from Market Place to the Black Boy.
Inside, well, what can we say? Is it enough to suggest that the
transformation of the interior has been at least as dramatic as that of the exterior: and that it
takes "Designer Dingy" to its logical extreme - even down to the 1950s front parlour
lurking just behind the main entrance.
More recently, in 1998, Durty Nellies seems to have emerged from a
period of closure apparently unchanged.
