If you care about pubs then you probably also care about beer. And
if you care about beer you will probably know about CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale). If you
don't, or if you want to find out more, we suggest you visit the CAMRA Home Page.
The earliest CAMRA Good Beer Guide on our shelves was produced 23
years before the latest, in 1976. It's interesting comparing the two. In that year, 10 Hull pubs
were featured. Of the 8 in the Virtual Crawl area, 6 are still in business: The George; The Minerva; The Cask & Cutter; Ye Old Blue Bell;
The "Wellington"; and The White
Hart. One further pub that was featured in 1976, the Clarence, continues on the opposite side
of the street in spiritual form as The New Clarence. The other
"missing" pub is the Zoological, which used to stand on land now occupied by the offices
of the Hull Daily Mail.
CAMRA has a local presence in the form of the
Hull & East Yorkshire Branch. They produce an excellent free newsletter called the Pub Mirror
every two months. This can be found in a number of pubs around the city. Each year the Hull &
East Yorkshire Branch also presents a "Pub of the Year" Award to a pub in its area. These
are shown in the Virtual Crawl by symbols like the one on the left. Recent winners of the Pub of
the Year Award are shown on the right.
