What you get from the book is a sense of the history of the pubs
and their areas; and the love of the author for his subject.
Not everything in the book is up to the standard of its historical
research. The maps are barely adequate for navigation: though it might be argued that they add a
sense of intrigue and mystery to a crawl. And, inevitably, there have been some changes since its
publication. In particular, a couple of the City Centre pubs are no more, or are now
nightclubs.
On balance, this book is a fiver very well spent. Having it in
your pocket will add greatly to your appreciation of the area and its pubs. I'm not sure how widely
it's available: but it is certainly stocked in Hull bookshops.
If you can lay your hands on a copy of this Guide, do so: you
don't get much in life that is both useful and free.
