The Baltic Wharf opened in the Summer of 1997. Inside it has been
very effectively and impressively converted into three large areas stretching back into the old
warehousing, one of which is done out in a cafe/restaurant style (complete with a splendid
selection of teas and coffees); the others as more traditional drinking establishments.
Which brings us to the drink. We stand to be corrected (and would
love to be), but the Baltic Wharf looks like a real-ale free zone. Indeed, you get the impression
that when it really gets into its swing glasses are pretty few and far between and most supping is
from the necks of designer-brew bottles. All this is a shame. I've no argument with those who
prefer to drink lager from bottles, and I've no fundamental problem with the Zamek lager which is
the main "draught" offering. But I wouldn't mind the choice of a nice ordinary real
bitter. Maybe the marketing consultants just didn't have me in mind...
